4/21/2014 2 Comments My First Refashion DressA friend of mine gave me this dress back in January that she didn't want anymore. Because it was super cute (and free) I took it. But the bad new is that it was a little too big and pushing being too short. (Please excuse my odd facial expressions) BEFORE I'll admit, not the most figure flattering dress I've ever put on. I had to wear a tank on underneath in order to get these pictures and still obtain some modesty. As you can see, there were a few problem-os. So with the help of my AMAZING alterations teacher (I call her my Jedi Master) I ripped that thing apart and made a few adjustments (praying the whole time that I wouldn't utterly destroy it in the process!). The first thing I did was to add a ruffle to the bottom of the skirt making it not so short. I found the ruffle at Hancocks in Chattanooga and it matched perfectly! I was so excited! AFTER After that I took up the side seams which fixed the whole gaping arm hole issue which included replacing my first invisible zipper. It turned out to be much easier than I thought so I didn't have to worry! Next came taking up the shoulder seams. Doing this took the neck line up as well and raised the hemline, which is why the ruffle was needed. Once that was done, I made a few more minor adjustments here and there just to get everything to lay right and fit better. So after a lot of ripping out seams, restitching said seams, ripping out some more, sewing some more then realizing "oh wait, that part needs to be fixed as well" I finally finished! Ah... much better! Wouldn't you agree? I so so so pleased with how it turned out especially considering that I had never altered an entire dress before! What do y'all think?

11/25/2013 1 Comment Fixing a Bridesmaid DressIn addition to sewing her bridal veil, Shelby also asked me to be one of her bridesmaids. (Almost cried that time too) For bridesmaid dresses, Shelby just picked the color and fabric she wanted us all to wear and we got to pick out our own dresses. I ordered mine from Milanoo.com but when I got it in the mail, I quickly realized something was wrong... (The Dress) (The Problem) The shoulders were WAY TOO BIG! As in, like, two inches too big! Also, the length (even with the shoes I'll be wearing) needed to be cut off a little. Which was expected, since I'm only 5 ft 3 in. And the bust was really too big for me too, (whoa! something not fitting me in the bust? That's new! [said sarcastically]) but I think that I can get by with it. So the length and bust part wasn't a total shock, but the shoulder seams were. :) Since I had no clue what to do, and I wasn't willing to risk trying to fix the dress myself and mess it up, I called up a lady that my Mom works with from time to time who use to do alterations. She said she thought she could help me out. So one Friday morning, I loaded up my precious dress and drove to Cleveland to try and get everything situated. The meeting went great! The lady pinned up the shoulders and hem on the dress then she taught me how to take everything up. We did the shoulders together at her house, then she instructed me on the hem and I went home and did it myself. (After) Ahh... much better! Now I can actually wear my dress! Thanks so much to the brave lady who helped me out! I really don't know what I would have done without her help and guidance. I probably would have tried to do it myself and end up tearing it in the process. Then both the dress and I would have wound up in *separate* corners with me curled up in a little sorrowful ball crying hysterically. (yes, it would have been that dramatic!)
Only 34 days until the wedding! I still can't get over the fact that Shelby chose me to be one of her bridesmaids and witness as she pledges her life to the man she loves for forever. *sniff* Ok Susan, don't cry. Get a hold of yourself. On a side note, the Jewish Festival of Lights (also known as Hanukkah) begins Wednesday at sundown and ends on the next Wednesday at sundown. I will be doing something special on my blog during that time so be sure and check back here on Wednesday and tell your friends! Love, Susan |
